This has been a very long last couple of days. (And I'm really done with feeling sick.)
Had a Latin test last Wednesday, Thursday everybody pretty much bombed our last style quizzes, which was frustrating and unpleasant. It was gloomy and raining Thursday, and cold. We were assigned an essay to write in lit, that's due this Thursday. Need to get started on that. Meant to write it over the weekend, but...
It's still a deep freeze, pretty much, inside Ross, so that's hard to deal with. Friday morning I woke up not feeling quite right, worse than the previous few days. By the end of nutrition I was a little afraid I'd just collapse if I didn't lay down or something, so I skipped psych and went to go find Dr. Faulds to tell him I wouldn't be at Latin. Then I head to the convenience store in Leoser for my make-do sickness get-well-kit, a package of mini donuts and a Powerade("Cause those Powerades, now, they're really good...") If you don't feel like eating, at least that's something that usually stays down.
I then go down to the clinic in Wyly (Is it just me, or is it just so NSU to put the clinic in a building that had been condemned as a dorm?) and schedule an appointment, work on filling out the paperwork and working on Monday's psych quiz, the appointment went easier than I expected. They thought I had a sinus infection, prescribed some antibiotics, and then I called Grandpa for a ride to Walgreens.
Got the medicine, then spent the night watching TV (sorta...) with Grandpa and Robbie and the dogs. Head back to the dorm just before lunchtime, have a strawberry milkshake for lunch, and futilely try to think while working on the psych quiz, I was basically just circling random words, almost. I had(and have) a massive headache, my temp is swinging from a snowman to a lightbulb, horribly congested, extremely sore throat. Felt nauseous(is that the right word, or would it be "nauseated"? I don't feel like thinking about proper AP style right now...) and other stuff too numerous to mention. Basically I was just miserable, curled up in a little ball wishing...pshh, I don't know what. Not really thinking about anything, really, just hoping the sickness will go away soon. (Edit out the second verse, and this tune would sort of fit. It was stuck in my head all weekend, anyway. Great wordplay, I've always thought. )
Had to take a pill at midnight, so to keep myself awake I was watching the baseball game. That. Was. Insane. Tied at 4-all in the bottom of the ninth, runners on second and third, one out, Jon Jay grounds out to shortstop Dustin Pedroia, who throws to home and catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia tags Yadier Molina. Two outs. But the play isn't over! Saltalamacchia fires a throw to third base, trying to get the double play, but the ball skips away from third baseman Will Middlebrooks, who then flops down in the basepath and trips Craig. (!!!!!) (See replay here.) CARDINALS WIN!!!! I was shocked, Mrs. Boyer was stunned, and everybody on Facebook was shaking their heads.
Slept for about two hours Saturday night, woke up at 2:24 a.m. It was miserable. Seven hours of throbbing headache, can't breathe well enough to sleep with the congestion, hoping to throw up but can't...ugh. Listened to some the Gospel Show on 99.5 with Grandpa once he woke up, then went back to the dorm, had a better-than-average-but-still-bleah caf lunch (their pancakes are usually pretty good, actually, but banana flavor...not so much. And it's always specially horrible on weekends.)
They've been out of coffee, so the machine is filled up with decaf (yuck!), and the Chick-Fil-A dispenser's Diet Coke setting hasn't been working very well for about the last week, I keep shooting my entire hand with the stuff.
It was good to visit with Grandpa and Robbie, though. But really, these were more the reasons I went over there: A, It's warm.(unlike the dorm) B, Food and pop. (I'm completely out of groceries) C, It's a real house. (not sure why that matters, but it does)
Finished the psych quiz Sunday afternoon, did a nutrition assignment, watched some of the NASCAR race, and otherwise just did as little as possible. SWAT had a program to do that night, I couldn't be a part of it, unfortunately, but I could still shoot video. We go to McDonald's afterwards for dinner because we're all famished, I go to bed super early, I was asleep sometime before 11 p.m. Missed the game, Boston won 4-2, and then again tonight 3-1. Rats.
Woke up around 2:30 a.m., fell asleep about 4 and woke up for good at 6:45. So I got about five hours of interrupted sleep, and I've been awake for about 41 of the last 48 hours. Made it through all three classes, though, so that's good. Made a 44 out of 50 on the quiz, which I'm happy with. Latin moved classrooms due to technical problems (the projector was locked in the "down" position with no way to bring it back up), so we moved to a different classroom and had to re-figure out a new seating arrangement.
Sort of maybe figured out my spring schedule, still a bit to work on, but got an idea now of what to take.
It's supposed to rain again most of the rest of the week, yay. And I've got a bunch of new assignments to tackle in nutrition, that essay to write, the psych test to take Wednesday...and I'm feeling better, but still definitely not well. I'd really like to just sleep for forever, is that allowed?
Rereading a lot of my old posts from over the last year here for the last couple weeks, that's been interesting, and kind of amazing that I got through. Sort of odd, though, like reading through old newspaper articles. "Wow, wish I would've seen that play....oh, wait...I was there..." The Thunder start their season on Wednesday night.
Random Quotes of the Day(like Random Songs of the Day, things that pop into your head on repeat for no good reason): "I am not dying for six college credits!" - Darcy from Thor, the Pledge of Allegiance(why?), the Tooth School Pledge from Laurie Keller's Open Wide: "I pledge allegiance to this mouth, and to the dentist who takes care of us. And to the gums on which we stand, strong and healthy, with toothbrushes and toothpaste for all." and a quote from one of the later Anne of Green Gables books, possibly Rilla of Ingleside? (Susan and Miss Cornelia are catching Anne up on all the latest gossip. Susan: "...and there was another visiting preacher at the Presbyterian church the other day. He picked the absolute worst candidating text you could imagine: 'Curse ye, Meroz!' And every time he'd get stuck for a point, he would pound on the pulpit and bellow, 'Curse ye, Meroz!' I don't have the slightest idea who Meroz is, but he was very thoroughly cursed that day, Mrs. Dr., dear.")

World Series Game 2
It was another chilly Massachusetts autumn night, with the temperature at 44 degrees, Thursday for Game 2 of the 2013 World Series at Fenway Park. St. Louis used the strong pitching of rookie Michael Wacha and smart baserunning to pull out the 4-2 win.
Carlos Beltran singled for St. Louis, and the fireballer Wacha, whose Backyard counterpart on the mound would be Angela Delvecchio, threw two strikeouts as the first inning passed by uneventfully. Yadier Molina got a base hit, a groundout, walk and two flies ended the second inning. Two strikeouts for Boston pitcher John Lester in the third, Wacha returned the favor in his half.
This fast-moving game got its' first real action of the night when Matt Holliday tripled into right center, he scored on Molina's sacrifice grounder. Dustin Pedrioa doubled and David Ortiz was walked for the Sox, but a David Descalso-Matt Carpenter-Matt Adams double play neutralized any scoring threat. Three up three down in the St. Louis fifth, another strikeout for Wacha.
Adams singled in the sixth inning, but nothing could come from it. Much like last night, on a 3-1 pitch Ortiz crushed the ball over the Green Monster for a two-run blast, giving Boston a 2-1 advantage.
David Freese was walked, Pete Kozma came in to replace him, Jon Jay got a base hit, Descalso walked, then Carpenter made game-winning contact on a play that certainly came from Dirt Yards; he flied out to left, Kozma tagged up and scored, the throw home was misplayed, and then the cut-off to third was wild; Jay scored and Descalso wound up on third base. Unofficially, it was scored as "2rsac7E2", a two-run sacrifice to left with two errors. Beltran scored Descalso with a base hit, and then reliever Carlos Martinez, or Ricky Johnson, tossed a strikeout and forced two groundouts to end the seventh inning. Three fly balls stranded Allen Craig in the eighth, Martinez struck out two more hitters, the Cardinals went three-up three-down in the ninth, and closer Trevor Rosenthal, or Achmed Khan, hammered down with nine strikes to seal the win for St. Louis, evening the Series at 1-all as they head to Missouri for Saturday evening's contest.

"This is Sunny Day and Vinnie the Gooch, sayin' 'See you next time!"

World Series Game 1
The calendar says that it's late October. The weather says it's time for hockey and basketball, NOT World Series baseball. The thermometer said it was 48 degrees at the first pitch. As for the game itself...that said more Backyard Baseball than anything else. The Cardinals had Luanne Lui, Kimmy Eckman and Angela Delvecchio out in the field, on a day(night?) when none of their bats were working.
In other words, the Red Nex (I mean, "Sox", starting the entire cast of Duck Dynasty) hammered St. Louis 8-1 in tonight's game at Playground Commons- er, Fenway Park.
Matt Holliday got a base hit in the first inning, but then Boston pitcher John Lester shut them down after four hitters in the first frame, while Adam Wainwright walked Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedrioa singled, David Ortiz got on base by a very poor double-play attempt, as Pete Kozma didn't even catch the forceout properly. Though it was a wild flick in the first place. Anyway, Mike Napoli gets revenge on the Cards for beating his Rangers two years ago, ripping a three-run double into left. Finally, the inning ended.
Two strikeouts and a grounder was all St. Louis could muster in the second, while things got even worse. Stephen Drew got on base due to a volleyball "You've got it!" mix-up between Wainwright and Yadier Molina, another base hit followed, another error was committed, RBI single came next, Carlos Beltran was injured getting a sacrifice out, and Boston led 5-0.
Ground ball, fly to first and strikeout and it's Boston's turn again. Wainwright managed a fly ball, line-drive and strikeout to give his team a shot in the fourth. Jon Jay was walked, Allen Criag and Molina both singled, but then David Freese, to go on top of his earlier error, grounded into a double play to strand everybody. Wainwright then mows down the first two batters and the third flies to center.
Three up, three down for St. Louis in the fifth. Boston gets two runners on base but fails to score. Nothing really else happens until the bottom of the seventh, Ortiz crushes a two-run homer. Matt Holliday would launch one left-center over the Green Monster in the top of the ninth, but it was too little, way too late. The Red Sox take Game 1 of the 2013 World Series by an 8-1 score.
"As you can imagine, there's gonna be a lot to celebrate at the water park!"
"For Vinnie the Gooch, this is Sunny Day, bidding you farewell!"
"'Bidding you farewell?' You've been readin' those fancy novels again, haven't ya?"
"Honestly, Vinnie...See ya next time, baseball fans!"

Mission Trips and Other Stuff
It was nice to get a break from school for a bit.
We dropped Courtney off at the airport Thursday morning, Amy LOVED the shuttle bus. Caleb and Trevor, too, but they were pretty bummed that we couldn't go very far past the check-in desk. Laura and Dylan were both pretty excited about actually leaving, too. We had at least fifteen people assembled to send off those three alone, and probably more will be there to welcome them back on Friday.
Her birthday went well, from what reports we've gotten, lots of singing and cake. Looking forward to hearing stories of what the trip was like.
I got to catch up on some reading, especially book-sale finds from the last visit. That was nice. And it was good to see the little goats(now not so little anymore), and Copper, and Rags. The world needs more good animals, especially dogs and cats. They're good motivators. Got Mom caught up on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, she loved it. (Two weeks til Thor...!!!!)
It was very good to be at GBC again, getting to hear good teaching and seeing friendly faces. We then went to the Buddy Walk, a fundraiser/awareness thing put on by the Down Syndrome Association of Tulsa. It's DSAT's biggest event of the year, and Amy LOVED IT.
Classes went by on Monday, it's been far, far too cold. Not really outside so much, it's supposed to get cooler this time of October, but inside, to still have the air-conditioners on? Thankfully they were turned off, but still... Although it has been colder than normal.
Grabbed dinner about 5 p.m, ran into Elizabeth coming into the UC. "Hey! What's up?" "Not much, just getting some dinner before practice starts." "Same...need a dinner buddy?" "Sure, why not?" Justin came by about five minutes later, and we all talked for about an hour, then briskly speedwalked to SWAT practice.
Editing went pretty well Tuesday, so did lit, had a Latin test this morning, think it went okay, but there's that nasty test-aftertaste that you're never quite sure about... psych quiz for Monday, then a test on Wednesday. So trying to get ready for those.
The Cardinals made it to the World Series again, which is awesome. They're playing the Red Sox, first game is tonight at seven. There's not going to be very much homework happening on-campus tonight, I'm thinking. (High percentage of Cardinal fans in Ross, at least.) And Jed and Shari and everybody else around St. Louis is on Cloud 9.
The NBA season starts next week, so we can forget the Sooners-vs-Cowboys debate on football and rally together as Thunder supporters. My feeling is that we won't do very well this year, upper-mid-pack in the West. But we'll see. They're starting their sixth season in OKC, which is unbelievable. Wasn't it yesterday that they moved from Seattle? And how is it that Oklahoma ended up with a PRO SPORTS TEAM?! Much less ONE THAT ALMOST WINS A CHAMPIONSHIP?! Amazing. Just...amazing.
Sat out on the porch the other day and played Abby Lee for about half an hour, that was nice. Some Audio Adrenaline, Rich Mullins, Journey and David Cook, mostly. ("Big House", "If I Stand", "Faithfully" and "Time of My Life", specifically.)
Studying eating disorders, mental disorders, depression and the ineffectuality of the educational system all at the same time isn't much fun. Somewhat interesting individually in a morbid sort of way, but all together...and then when the main objective of the day is to just stay warm, that doesn't help much. Need to plot out next semester's schedule, enrollment opens soon. I think my TV might be close to wearing out, it's been giving off these weird overheating smells for the last couple days. Maybe I should plan a trip to Florin.

Fall Break
Whew...almost made it to fall break. (Whoa, we're halfway there...)
Not really sure how to describe this sophomore year so far. It's just been tons different, yet so much alike. But, anyway, things are going well for now.
Just got through midterms this week, which was tiring and stressful. And I panicked when I saw my midterm grades for Lit and Editing. But then Dr. Eversole said she aims them lower than what she thinks we'll make(that's a nasty-but oh-so-effective trick of journalism), and Prof. Semrow said midterms were pretty irrelevant and she just typed in some numbers for everybody.
Staying alive(NO, there is no link to that song in this post. If it gets stuck in your head...sorry about that.) in nutrition and psych for now... Latin is going great.
Making some friends, which is a very good thing. Mostly through SWAT, we had our first program tonight(Sunday, it's now early Monday morning at this section of the post). In this clip, Jacob buys the world's most lemony lemon ever. And here, I practice for taking over Ryan Seacrest's job someday. We still have a lot of rough edges to sand down, but overall it went very well for an opening performance. Then we invaded Mazzio's afterwards.
Went to Grandpa's Friday night, good to visit with them. The dogs were overjoyed to see me again. Bob's birthday was Saturday, so Louise planned a massive party/reunion thing and hosted it, which went well. I didn't really know very many people, but it was nice to be around the Lankfords that I did know, and everyone seemed to have a great time. The family came down, and Trish and Damon, and even Dayla and her family. There were about 75 people who showed up. Lots of food was eaten, and music played, and PING PONG.
Still not sleeping very well, about six-ish hours a night, usually waking up once or twice. Ross is freezing. I posted this on my Facebook the other day, "When you walk out of the shower and your first thought is, "I'm Bear Grylls, and I'm going to attempt to survive in the Arctic tundra," it's too cold." Elizabeth commented that that was the best description of Ross ever. At least every resident shares in some of the misery that is living in this building...that's why we complain so much.
Monday(today) was a good day for running, a mist/rain blend falling all over everything in a peaceful sort of way. It was not a good day to watch a documentary for homework, but, ya know...
The second Thor movie comes out in about three weeks, looking forward to it.
Courtney, Dylan, Laura, Mr Gundersen and a handful of other people are going to Mexico Friday, they're pretty excited. Hope it goes well.
