Once Upon a Time...

   Once upon a time.

Some of the most magical opening words in literature.

Why so powerful? I have no idea. But it's a gateway into fantasy, where dragons ravage the countryside and poor maidens need to be rescued, particularly if they're princesses.

Lots of good stories begin this way. So do a lot of bad tales. It's a tool, which is only as useful or destructive as the writer's skills and intentions are. If you begin a tale this way, be careful to make it interesting.
